Mainstreet, Smalltown, USA

I had to look for the post office here in this new town this morning and I found it not very far from me in the quaintest little "Main Street, USA" type place. Small shops line both sides of the curvy roads, and there is a backdrop of trees already turning forming Fall colors: red, yellow, orange, brown, and all the colors in between. The town looks like a historical district with older buildings, much like the little town where I grew up in Kentucky. I could've stepped right out of the 1960's and into this place with the only hint of the recent decade evidenced by the newer model automobiles. This is my element.

I found a nice restaurant right in the middle of the town, and that restaurant was the landmark the office girl gave me at the doctor's office I'll be going to on Friday. I think this may be where I take my sister for her birthday in January. I've really missed her. We had a 5 1/2 hour phone conversation Sunday night and it was wonderful catching up with her. She doesn't work all that far from here, but since we grew up four or five towns from here, I don't think she knows any more about this area than I do. When I go to the doctor I'm going to take my camera with me and take a walk through the town. As I said, I'm in my element. This is the type of place I've dreamed of living, even if only temporarily, to have a setting conducive for writing. The only thing that would make this more perfect would be if I didn't know anybody here except for my kids and I wouldn't have to run into anybody I know when I'm out exploring. I would attempt to explain why I feel that way but I wouldn't know where to start.

There are so many photo opportunities here that I want to take advantage of when the colors are at their most vibrant. There is an old barn on a rural road that I found last week near here. One end of the barn is painted red while the rest of the barn is paint-less with weatherworn wood. The rich Autumn colors splattered over the trees in the background make it a photographer's dream shot. Photographer I'm not, but I will take my camera with me one day soon and get the amateur version and share it here. It's going to be a good season. Next, pumpkin carving is in order.
